cecilia villaverde.

Mexico City based filmmaker and visual artist, Cecilia Villaverde, specializes in auteur cinema, documentary and experimental films. As a director, cinematographer and post-producer, her storytelling aims to showcase human stories.

Her creations shed light on untold stories that connect with parts of herself as a womxn, latinx, and part of the LGBTQ+ community.

“I was raised believing that anyone could be whoever they wanted to be, love whoever you wanted and choose your own identity. I believe this in my heart, but the society we live in keeps pushing everyone to fit into a pre-established box.

My family comes from the small town of Juchitán, Oaxaca, in Mexico. Juchitán has long recognized the third gender as a concept: the Muxes.

Muxes are biologically born as men, but they don’t follow the traditional norms of the gender binary.

Through my work for the past years I have documented stories that wouldn’t fit in that box. People from the LGBTQ+ community that want to share both their struggles and their pride: the non gender binary, the proudly queer, the sex workers who love their jobs. All while celebrating the beauty of the human experience.

As an artist I believe I have a responsibility to share these stories with the world.”

ELLXS is the pronoun for THEM in Spanish. It means all of us.
